UK government priorities are showcased in protests in London
Representatives from trade unions, activist groups, and campaign organizations united under the rallying cry “No to Austerity 2.0,” urging the Labour government to rethink policies that slash support programs while simultaneously increasing defense budgets.
A spokesperson for the People’s Assembly criticized recent government actions, stating, “Scrapping winter fuel payments, keeping the Tory two-child benefit cap, cutting disability support, and slashing foreign aid—while boosting defense spending—are not ‘tough choices,’ they are political choices.”
Protesters also condemned Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s combative rhetoric, accusing him of employing militaristic language to deflect scrutiny of his economic measures. According to campaign materials handed out during the demonstration, “His war-mongering talk of war-readiness and a new era of threat are a cynical attempt to deflect any criticisms of his policy of cuts and austerity.” The leaflet further charged that “His call for everyone to be part of the defense of the country is an attempt to label anyone who opposes his obscene militarism and austerity as unpatriotic.”
The demonstration highlighted deep public concern about the government’s priorities, with many participants demanding a shift away from military expenditure toward safeguarding welfare services.
