Usage of AI in UK court could lead to criminal prosecution

(MENAFN) Legal professionals in the UK have received a stark warning from senior judges about the risks of using artificial intelligence in legal proceedings, especially when it involves citing cases that do not actually exist. The warning highlights that such actions may not only damage the credibility of the legal system but could also lead to criminal charges.

According to judicial officials, lawyers in two recent cases submitted written arguments to the High Court that appeared to rely on unverified AI-generated content. These submissions, it was noted, included fabricated legal precedents, raising significant concerns about the use of AI in legal practice.

“There are serious implications for the administration of justice and public confidence in the justice system if artificial intelligence is misused,” declared a senior judge in the decision issued last Friday.

The two cases reached the High Court after being flagged by lower courts, which noticed inconsistencies and signs of AI-generated witness statements and legal citations. Upon closer review, one attorney involved in a high-profile lawsuit over $122.085 million financing dispute with Qatar National Bank was found to have referenced 18 case rulings that had no legal basis or record.

In that particular matter, the claimant, Hamad Al-Haroun, issued an apology for inadvertently misleading the court. He admitted that the false citations had been created using publicly accessible AI programs. While taking full accountability, Al-Haroun also clarified that his lawyer, Abid Hussain, was not responsible for the error.

As noted in reports, the judiciary emphasized that while AI can be a helpful tool, it must be used with caution and oversight. Any misuse that undermines the legal process or introduces false information into court records will not be tolerated.
